Indian Railways have witnessed a concerning rise in train derailments, with 19 incidents occurring in the first seven months of 2023. and Auditor General of India's report linked a significant portion of derailments to insufficient track renewal investment. The report also highlighted inadequate utilization of allocated funds for track renewals. Several factors contribute to derailments, including poor track maintenance, deviations from track parameters, and defects in coaches and wagons. Recent derailments include incidents in West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, underscoring the ongoing safety concerns. Data from the Rajya Sabha confirms that derailments are the most common type of rail accident in India, with the number increasing from 27 in 2021-22 to 36 in 2022-23. Comptroller and Auditor General of India ka report bataye hai ki bahut saare derailment ka reason track ko renew na karna hi hai. Unhone yeh bhi bola ki track renewal ke liye diye jaane waale paise ka sahee se use bhi nahi ho raha hai. Track maintenance, track ke parameter mein problem, aur coaches aur wagons mein kharabiaan bhi derailment ke karan hain. Haaal mein hi West Bengal, Jharkhand, aur Uttar Pradesh mein derailment hone se yeh saaf ho gaya hai ki safety ka maamla bahut serious hai. Rajya Sabha ke data se pata chala hai ki India mein sabse zyada derailment hi hote hain, aur 2021-22 mein 27 derailment the jo 2022-23 mein 36 ho gaye. Railway Ministry ne Plasser Quick Relaying System jaise technology ka use shuru kiya hai, taaki yeh problem solve ho sake.

"Railway revenue in 2022-23 was ₹1.2 lakh crore, and the track renewal expenses in that year were 13.5 per cent of the revenue. In FY24(RE), total railway revenue rose to ₹1.5 lakh crore, but spending on track renewal dipped to 11 per cent of revenue. As per last week’s Budget, the railway revenue is budgeted at Rs 1.8 lakh crore in FY25 (BE), and the track renewal spends are pegged at 9.7 per cent of this revenue."
