Train Tip
Today (20:14)   12341/Agnibina Express

12341/12342 Agnibina Express is one of the best train to travel between Howrah and Asansol. Though people call it as Agnibina, but people travelling in and out from Durgapur, Panagarh and Mankar still call it as Bidhan Express. First thing first, one of the best train. Super cleaned and well maintained. Courteous staff as well. During my journey on 11th June on 12341 in C2 from Howrah to Panagarh. The TTE started checking the ticket by greeting everyone with a Good Evening and smile. Let aside the coaches, even the washrooms were clean and well maintained. There was no nuisance from the UR passengers near the toilets, which by the way I have observed in Coalified and Black Diamond Express.

From Howrah, it is designated to depart from Platform No 12 only. It leaves just behind the Coalfied Express, which departs Howrah at 1720. Once it leaves, the rake enters the platform. For people travelling without prior reservation can also go for UR ticket and can easily get seats in the General Compartments without any hustle or anything. Since this is the last daily passenger train to Durgapur/Asansol and others, so the crowd is not that much as one will get if one is travelling in UR coaches of Coalfield. Another thing which I have observed is AC Chair Car gets filled up quickly as compared to Non AC Chair Car. Both the AC coaches runs jam packed from Howrah. However, the AC coaches remains slightly empty for the 12342. So if someone is unable to get ticket in AC Chair Car in 12342, they can directly approach TTE as well.

There are some unofficial things, which I have observed during my journey in this train and these are;

1. Some UR coaches are opened in certain stations only, such as Andal and Durgapur.

2. 12342 (ASN-HWH) is flocked by the daily passengers. So if you are travelling in it from any station and planning it in advance, better book ticket in Non AC Chair or AC Chair Car as per your convenience. UR runs jam packed during this trip and quite a time the daily passengers becomes much hostile if you ask for seat. I am saying this from my personal experience and that from of my friends and colleagues.

3. 12342 (ASN-HWH) will definitely give unscheduled stop at Liluha. Quite a number of passengers deboards at that station. Though it is not a schedule stop, but every time the train will stop there.

From Railfans Perspective: I will say best train to feel the 130 kmph agression of HWH WAP-7 of a non-Shatabdi Train. Specifically with 12341, the way it speeds up after passing Liluah, knocking upto 130 kmph till Dankuni and then again gearing upto it util Barrdhaman and then way forward is sheer beauty. Passing the stations such as Belur, Bally and others in the dark at sheer speed is absolute bliss. The same is for the 12342. The way the train knocks up with HWH P-7 showing its sheer aggression through the plains of Bengal, specifically between Asansol and Barrdhaman amid the morning sun is an absolute bliss to the eyes. The 130 kmph show is an absolute bliss to the eyes.

Based on trip on 23.06.22 from CSMT to Bilaspur :
1. Cleanliness : OBH present in all coaches and acting on time to time to keep the toilet and pathways clean. Mot of the coaches are 20-21 made, so no complaints here. old, rusty and dirty ECoR rake of Gitanjali is history now.
2. Punctuality : There was no complaint in this department earlier also. All the zone en-route give top priority to this train and no other train comes in it way. Except for some times Adi hwh SF 12833 make it
crawl in absence of clearing ahead. SECR also has some other plans some day.
That day train ran from CMT to Rajnandgaon bang on time ( minor delay at Jalgaon and Wardha which it made up before next stoppage)
3. Availability : It ha always been a tough task to get seat in this train. Most of the passengers are end to end or de boarding in SER areas. So chance of clearance of intermediate station travelers PQWl and rlwl quota is very less.
4. Catering : Though all item present in the pantry, personally didn't find their taste up to the mark. Veg thali not of good quality.
Option available
Breakfast : Poha, omlette,samosa, kachodi, paneer/chicken pakoda
lunch/dinner : veg thali, egg thali, chicken thali, Maach bhaat, veg/egg biryani(bland spiced rice in practical).
E-catering at Bhusaval and nagpur are other alternatives available.
Tasted Vada Pav at kalyan and Igatpuri off which that at kalyan was of good taste. Through out this train halt is not more than 5-10 minute at any station en route which is less for grabbing on station vendors food items.
5. Railfanning: Excellent . Loads of crossings and overtakings with out being beaten for once. Monsoon views of Thal ghat ( kalyan to nasik ) are enticing.
6. Speed: waiting for 130 mps upgradation of durg bilaspur section after which a major TT overhaul is expected. Currently from tata to andul and nagpur durg 130 mps sanctioned. Current TT is of 110 mps still its a decent one for a regular SF Express.

Today (19:30)   12246/Yesvantpur - Howrah Duronto Express

Traveled on 12246 on 10 June and returned back on 12245 on 25 June. Was onboard AC 2 Tier (A1) on the both the trips. To be honest, it was one of the worst Duronto Train I have ever traveled on. First thing first, I will break up my trip report into the following ways where I will rate it out of 5;

Food: 0/5. Poor Quality of Food. Totally Poor. In Veg, there is only one option which is Paneer Butter Masala (As per the Caterer), however as per the passenger
it is more of four pieces of paneer in some kind of oily-yellowish curry. There is no other option. Yes, for 12246, in dinner one can get Mix Veg, but that's quality is far worse and inferior than the Paneer. In Nov-Veg, one can choose between Egg and Chicken. Better go with the Chicken, because Egg Curry is more of like two eggs in yellow watery oil curry. No taste, nothing. Atleast, the chicken curry was tasty. In the entire journey, you will get three variation of dal. In first day lunch a watery dal, in dinner, dal looks more like a paste and in next day lunch, the dal is more of a like a yellow water. If they serve Roomali Rotis, then yeah its okay, otherwise if they serve you normal rotis, better not to have it. In place of tea, they are handing out hot water with tea kit. God know how one is going to make a tea, via hands ? No cutlery is provided. Only one plastic white spoon. Ice Creams are served hot, fully melted. During my return journey in 12245, in lunch instead of ice cream they started serving out Soan Cake. And their excuse was that the fridge was not working properly.

Cleanliness: 0/5. Specifically for A1. During both course of my journey and also during my journey in 02245/02246 Duronto COVID Special, each time the A1 was some old coach. Seats were worn out, the toilets were dirty . Howsoever, OBHS cleans it, but the old dents would not got. Seems like were never refurbished. OBHS was sitting all the way in the TTE seat and were seldom cleaning the gallery of the coach. However, during my return journey in 12245, A1 was making some very weird humming noise. First I thought it must be from the EOG. However, it was different. When I went to H1, there was no sound such. Additionally, heavy jerks were experienced throughout the journey.

Security; 1/5. Not a single RPF personal I saw in the entire journey. During each stoppage, vendors and beggers were coming inside the train. I have never experienced the same while travelling in premium trains such as Rajdhani and Duronto.

Punctuality: 5/5. Atleast in this matter, it won't upset you. I had to catch 12341 Agniveena (Bidhan) from Howrah. And my only concern was the evening suburban traffic. However, it pulled in at time. So no complaint on this matter.

Ticket Availability: 3/5. It is the only premium train with the shortest time travel between Kolkata and Bangalore. If you want to book tickets in Sleeper, better book it in time and that too in ARP period. SL gets booked much fast and runs jam packed throughout the year. For AC classes, you can get ticket even if you book 20 days prior to your travel. However, for AC 2, it gets filled much quicker as compared to AC First and AC 3. It is better if IR augments 12245/12246 with one additional AC 2 Tier.

Railfanning: 5/5. I think much is written about it. But in an all, a good train for for rail-fanning. The daylight crossing on the second day is absolutely the best, specifically skipping some of the major stations of Odisha such as Bhadrak and others.

Conclusion: The train was best of its kind, before COVID-19. Everything was good. However, post COVID-19 everything has changed. Food quality to everything. Earlier only Caterer use to ask for tips. Now OBHS and Attendants too ask for "Bakshish". The way things are going, it seems that after few years, even Guards, TTE and LP would also be asking for some Bakshish. Linens were terrible. No blankets were provided. I have traveled in ER's premium trains and in SER's premium trains as well. But to be honest, ER's premium trains have far much better service that SERs.
