The WDM3D was a more pathbreaking kind of locomotive for the Indian Railways, the “real” next generation” after the WDM3A. It was again based on the ALCO, powered by the old faithful ALCO 251 engine. These were the result of IR getting it right how to rebuild the engine to produce 3300 hp (result of the WDM3C experiments) and at the same time being able to integrate into this high powered ALCo the best features of the EMD locomotives like microprocessor control, larger fuel tanks and oil sump, possible fiberglass cabin and improved control stands. Later models also have the DBRs fitted on the short hood roof, giving them the “hoodie” look. Comparing with the WDM3A, the WDM3D can carry 1.5 tonne more axle load (19.5t) and generates 38.5t Maximum Tractive Effort compared to the 30.5t of the WDM3A. The engine is classified WDM3D though it outputs only 3300 hp and not 3400 hp as their name should suggest. These locomotives can be easily distinguished from other ALCOs as their body shell is “narrower, giving a lot of walkway space around it with full length railings and their long hood has some predominant “platform” space extended up front with a solid cowcatcher. Their road numbers start with 11101. Earlier WDM3Ds had issues with their electronics which probably led to the interim development of the WDM3B in 2005 which is basically a lower powered WDM3D without microprocessor control. Also, the 3D is the only ALCO model currently in production.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
