To be fair though, lack of technology for communication and lack of transport to that region also stopped them from doing the construction. After all, they did construct some of the most difficult routes like the Bhor, Thull and Braganza ghat routes more than 150 years ago.

more... the British engineers who planned that challenging route. And that was when they had access to the roads in the region for quickly getting supplies from Pune or Bombay. The Konkan region was in the middle of nowhere. It would have been suicidal for them to attempt any railway on the route.
