History of Jabalpur Junction
Was constructed roughly around 1867 with the completion of Allahabad - Jabalpur branch line, by the East India Railway, thereby providing a link between Delhi - Jabalpur and Calcutta - Jabalpur, via Allahabad.
By this time, the Great Indian Peninsular Railway had already spread its lines to Igatpuri via the Thull Ghats. Soon, it extended tracks to Bhusawal, Khandwa and Itarsi.
With...
more... a motive of connecting Bombay with Calcutta, the GIPR laid tracks all the way upto Jabalpur, hence providing a direct connection between Bombay and Jabalpur.
In this way, after 17 years of running of the first train in India ( between Bombay and Thane ), in 1870 the Bombay - Calcutta route was opened and rail travel between Mumbai and Kolkata became possible.
