Kitson Pacific
North Western Railways No.145, a Kitson 'Pacific' (works No.5175 built in 1918) heading a short train of cane empties on the 60cm gauge line serving the cane fields with Saraya Sugar Mill, near Gorakhpur. The mill was built in 1933 and at the time of my visit was driven exclusively by steam power. My visit on a misty and very dull 9th January 1999, was in the middle of a dispute by factory workers who had hijacked some of the cane wagons in protest of the threatened closure of the factory!
